Tortilla Marissa's "North of the Border Cafe" – Fort Collins Colorado

 This is been one of my favorite Mexican type places in Fort Collins for some time  back to when they had a location in Windsor. Though they do say they are north of the border food like some of the new Mexican items like the stacked enchiladas and a bunch of Tex-Mex items.

 So dad and I decided to stop by on this day for a Chile Relleno. We got here at the late end of lunch. It was a little fuller than it typically is at that time, but it wasn't full either so we were seated right away.  

Chips and salsa were brought quickly with two dishes of salsa they usually just give us one, but today was my lucky day I guess. Also our drink orders were taken we both got Cokes. The salsa was good maybe not the best I've ever had, but different than I've ever had anywhere else. It has lots of chunks of tomatoes, onions and peppers and kind of a little runny in between all the chunks and is also served warm which is different than I've ever had around here or anywhere else for that matter. While we were eating this we still didn't have our drinks. Finally just before we are about to ask about them our waitress brought them out and took our orders I ordered the Roasted Signature Chile Relleno plate with just one Relleno ($8.49) and dad got the plate with two ($11.49). These are served with rice and beans and smothered with green Chile.  We sat and talked for a while and waited and pretty much finished up the chips and salsa.  I noticed that a lot of the tables were now empty. In Really not too much time our food arrived.

 First of all the Chile Relleno was delicious with a green chile stuffed with cheese in not too thick of a beer batter that was fried. The pepper was still kind of firm and not too soft like some peppers you get.  It was a fresher pepper than you get most places, so you can taste more of the pepper flavor. The green Chile was good but a lot of it ran under the rice, the lettuce and the pico de gallo that were on the side. This had a little spice to it, but I still wouldn't exactly say it was hot. The beans were all right although I'm not the biggest beans fan, but dad thought they were very good. The rice tasted good but there were some hard spots here and there. The pico de gallo was not as good this time as I remember it being.  There were a couple of bad spots in the tomatoes and all the items in it didn't seem as fresh and the lime was very noticeable.

Most of the time I order the Chile Relleno, but my last visit I tried their special which was a stuffed Sopapilla.  I've always been intrigued by them, but had never had one so I figured since it was their special that is what I got.  This came with my choice of filling, I chose chicken which went inside the Sopapilla with beans and then smothered in green Chile with a side of  Rice. This was quite good and might even be better than a smothered burrito.  I thought it could use a little more green Chile, but that's what I think about a lot of things.

I enjoyed my lunch at Tortilla Marissa’s like I always do; they do seem to have consistency issues here and there but one thing that's always delicious is the Chile Relleno.
